Materials Required
- Baking soda (2 tablespoons)
- Vinegar (1/2 cup)
- Dish soap (a squirt)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Container (bottle or cup)
- Tray or outdoor area (to contain the mess)
Instructions
- Place your container on a tray or take it outside.
- Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the container.
- Add a squirt of dish soap for extra foam.
- If using food coloring, add a few drops (red looks like lava!).
- Pour in the vinegar and watch the eruption!
What's Happening?
When baking soda (a base) mixes with vinegar (an acid), they react to create carbon dioxide gas. This gas forms bubbles that push the mixture up and out of the container, creating a foaming "eruption" just like a volcano!
The dish soap helps trap the gas bubbles, making the foam last longer and look more dramatic.
